What changed on the July 9, 2026 PMP exam.

The PMP moved to a new Exam Content Outline on July 9, 2026. Here's the short version of what's different: the exam itself, the application rules, and the fees, checked against PMI's published documents in July 2026.

The exam itself

New domain weights. People 33% · Process 41% · Business Environment 26%. Business Environment is the big story: it grew from a minor domain under the old outline into a quarter of the exam, and risk now lives there.

26 tasks. The new outline defines 26 tasks (8 People, 10 Process, 8 Business Environment). Every question on the exam maps to one of them, which is also how you should judge any question bank: ask for its per-task mapping. Ours is public at /coverage/.

180 questions, 240 minutes. The 2026 sitting runs 180 questions in 240 minutes with two scheduled breaks, about 80 seconds per question.

New question styles. Multi-part case-study sets (several questions against one scenario), matching and drag-and-drop, graphic interpretation, and pull-down items, alongside multiple choice and multiple response.

New emphasis. AI in projects, sustainability and ESG, and value delivery run all through the scenarios instead of sitting in one section.

The application rules (these changed too)

Two changes took effect the same day, and both help you. The qualifying experience window grew from 8 to 10 years, so project work from 2016 onward can count again on a 2026 application. And a new associate-degree tier was added at 48 months.

The four ways to qualify, each also needing 35 hours of PM education (waived with an active CAPM):

High school diploma: 60 months leading projects, within the last 10 years.
Associate degree (new tier): 48 months, within the last 10 years.
Bachelor's degree, any field: 36 months, within the last 10 years.
Degree from a PMI GAC-accredited program: 24 months, within the last 10 years.

The fees

US exam fees rose on August 6, 2026:

New exam: $445 for PMI members, $675 for non-members (up from $405 and $595).
Retakes: $275 for members, $375 for non-members.
Membership: about $164 a year plus a $10 application fee, and it usually pays for itself against the non-member price.

What this means for your prep

The old exam no longer exists. A question bank written for the 2021 outline is practice for a test nobody sits anymore, whatever its question count says.
